Abstract
In-service training of teachers is a program aimed at organizing and conducting training of
personnel involved in management and administration of programmes in schools. Since the
trends in overall performance in science and mathematics is poor as per the annual KNEC
reports, MOE statistics and Baseline studies (1998),this study therefore sought to establish the
implications of in-service education and training of teachers in management of mathematics and
science education in public secondary schools in Ainamoi Division, Kericho county Kenya.
Holmes problem solving approach and Locke’s Goal setting theories related to the area of study
will also be looked at and this leads to the development of a conceptual framework showing the
relationship among the various variables. This study aimed at establishing the implications of in-
service education and training in the management of mathematics and science education in
public secondary schools in Ainamoi Division, Kericho county Kenya. This study adopted ex-
post facto design. The study population comprised of teachers, heads of department and school
principals. Interview schedule and the questionnaires were used to provide useful information to
be analyzed in this study. Statistical techniques such as standard deviation, percentages, mean
and mode were used to analyze the data. The data was collected from 52 teachers, 24 heads of
department and 24 principals from public secondary schools in Ainamoi Division, Kericho
county Kenya. The data collected were presented through the use of tables, pie charts, bar
graphs, histograms and frequency polygons. The findings of this study will help the teachers,
heads of departments and school head teachers to have a positive outlook deeming it an
opportunity to help enrich them professionally and be better equipped to meet the challenges of
their duties and responsibilities of managing mathematics and science education in secondary
schools. It will also be used to publish management newsletters and disseminate relevant
information aimed at improving the management in schools.
