Abstract
The rapid growth in Information Communication and Technologies (ICT) have brought
remarkable changes in the twenty-first century, as well as affected the demands of modern
societies. Kenya is in the process of implementing laptops in primary schools in Kenya. However,
management of laptops in standard one is becoming more important to schools and the success of
such implementation is often due to preparedness of the school management in effective
management of the primary schools laptops. The study was concerned with assessing primary
school management preparedness to management of free primary school laptops in Kenya. The
purpose of the study therefore was to assess primary school management preparedness to
management of primary school laptops in Kenya focusing in Makueni County. The study assessed
the school management preparedness to management of lap tops in Makueni County. The study
was carried out in county of Makueni. Makueni is a town in Kenya, located approximately 120
kilometers (75 miles) northeast of Nairobi towards Eastern region. Descriptive research design
waschosen because it would enable the study to generalize the findings to a larger population. The
population of interest of this study was the 112 Primary schools in Makueni County. There
are112primary school in Makueni County. The target population for this studywas112registered
primary schools in Makueni County (Ministry of Education, 2012). The study population was the
headteachers and teachers of primary schools in Makueni County. To select the participating
schools, the researcher used simple random sampling to select 50 primary schools in Makueni
County. Primary data was obtained through self-administered questionnaires with closed and
open-ended questions. The questionnaire was pilot tested to remove any ambiguity I the instrument
and enhance validity and reliability of the instrument. A descriptive analysis was employed.
Descriptive statistics such as means, standard deviation and frequency distribution were used to
analyze the data. Quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS version 17.5. Tables and figures were
used appropriately to present the data collected for ease of understanding and analysis. Qualitative
data was analyzed through content analysis and presented in prose form. From the findings, the
study established that school management making computer hardware accessible, access to
internet and appropriate technologies, availability of ICT teaching programs and availability of up
to date software as sought by school management are the infrastructures that influence school
management preparedness in management of laptops in ICT adoption in schools. The study
concluded that school employs computer trained personnel’s, teachers taken for computer training,
the level of competency among teachers being enhanced and school management employ
resources towards acquisition of knowledge and skills in school to a moderately extent indicating
. The study concluded that school enhancement of computer training for ease of ICT Integration,
offering teachers support in application of ICT in teaching and offering of new technologies for
teachings hindered school preparedness for management of laptops to a great extent.
