Factors contributing to poor performance in KCPE among public primary school in Mwingi District. A case study of five school in Nuu ward, Mwingi East.

Abstract

Abstract The study was aimed at investigating the causes of poor performance in public primary schools in Mwingi district specifically Mwingi East, Nuu ward. Data was collected from 4-8 respondents by use of interviews and questionnaires. All the data acquired was analyzed by use of frequency distribution and percentages. The information provided by the parents, teachers and pupils about the children’s academic difficulties guide education stakeholders to form informed solutions to such causes. However an in depth research is usually necessary before making a final diagnosis, it is important to come up with a treatment plan early, that the children can perform up to full potential considering that the research tried to find the reasons for poor performance and find viable solutions to the problem. The research informed the concerned parties who include teachers, education officers, parents and the government on what to do to improve the performance in public primary schools in Mwingi district. The research project was carried out in an area where so many challenges exist. For example poor transport due to poor roads and communication networks, illiterate people and an area covered by forest. Despite of this the research was successful and recommendations were made to the Government, the head teachers and the parents who are key stakeholders of the school. The research was aimed at showing light to academic achievement in an area that has been perishing over poor performance over years. In the researcher’s view the area has been in a dark room that needs light for the dwells to see the great potentials that they have though they do not utilize them.
