A study of challenges facing teaching and learning of kiswahili langauge in secondary schools in Mui zone, Mwingi East sub County, Kitui county.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to find out the challenges facing teaching and learning of Kiswahili language in public secondary schools in Mui Zone. The study was guided by the following specific objectives: to find out the importance of Kiswahili language, to establish the challenges facing teachers and students in teaching and learning Kiswahili language in public secondary schools in Mui Zone and to explore strategies to improve teaching and learning of Kiswahili language in public secondary schools in Mui Zone. The significance of the study was to investigate challenges that Kiswahili teachers and learners face and suggest possible solutions in an effort to enhance effective teaching and learning, which would culminate into good performance. The researcher employed survey research design, covering public secondary schools in Mui Zone because it gathers systematically factual information by interviewing or administering a questionnaire to a sample of individuals. The sample consisted of students (n=3) and teachers (n=3). The study used random sampling method to sample the schools in Mui Zone. Data collection instruments used were questionnaires and interview guide. A questionnaire is a carefully designed instrument (written, typed or printed) for collecting data directly from people. The researcher used closed ended questions structured in such a way that the responded is provided with a list of responses from which to select an appropriate answer. On the other hand the researcher used interview technique to obtain information from the sample. To ascertain the validity and reliability of the research instruments, the researcher used two secondary schools in Mui Division a pilot group.
