An Investigation Into The Use of Information And Communication Technology (ICT) in Teacher Training At Mount Kenya University Nkubu Campus

The need to carry out this research was inspired by the newly implemented ICT system at Mount Kenya University Nkubu Campus. This research therefore was purposed to investigate the use of ICT in teacher training at Mount Kenya University Nkubu Campus Faculty of Education. The research was guided by 4 key concerns on the ICT system at MKU: The purposes for which students and lecturers at the Faculty of Education used the ICT services for, the impact of the ICT services in their day to day teaching and Learning activities, the problems they encounter with the ICT system at the Faculty of Education and suggestions and recommendations on the ICT system to MKU and other institutions of teacher training. The target population for the study was 720 students in the Regular Full-time Program in the Faculty of education 14 Lecturers teaching the students and 5 administrators. The Simple Random sampling method was used to select 20% of the total number of the students, 70% of lectures and 100 % of administrators since the targeted was only 5. Only 110 students returned the questionnaire that is 76.39%, On the other hand 7 lecturers responded to the questionnaire that is 70% while 3 did not respond due to unavoidable circumstances, while the 5 selected administrators responded to the questionnaire, that 100%. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize data into frequencies and percentages. The qualitative data generated in the research was analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that the Faculty of Education students and lecturers depended largely on the ICT services in their teaching and learning activities. It was also found out that they experienced problems when using the services which the administrators were trying to find solutions to. The researcher also recommended that other teacher training institutions to consider the use of ICT in their institutions.
