Publication: Investigation of implementation of physical education Curriculum in secondary schools in Kitui County

The primary purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting the implementing of physical education curriculum in secondary schools. It focuses on the effectiveness of teaching and learning physical education (PE) qualification of teachers, availability and affordability of examination council (KNEC) for not examining P.E as a subject in the curriculum was also considered. To realize the purpose of this study a descriptive was developed. The instruments used in this study were the questionnaires, one for the head teachers and other for teachers which was personally administered by the researcher. The other tool used was an observation scheduled to determine the available equipments, facilities and games. The total of 12 PE teachers and 5 head teachers from Kitui County gave their responses, P.E facilities and games were also observed in different schools within Kitui. The data was analyzed using content analysis while presentation of findings was done in pie chart and frequency tables, the major findings of this study were that: there are inadequate facilities and equipments in schools hindering effective implementation of P.E curriculum in schools, acute shortage of trained P.E teachers in schools, funds for running P.E programmes are inadequate and limited, P.E is not examined by KNEC hence students are not motivated to take it seriously, P.E requires more time to be allocated on the time table to ensure effective implementation of P.E curriculum in schools. Recommendations were made to develop a P.E curriculum that is examinable and graded by KNEC in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KSCE), more time allocation for physical education, training and regular in servicing of P.E teachers
