Publication Open Access Mount Kenya University Botanical Garden Shares Its Diversity Internationally(Mount Kenya University, 2015)The Mount Kenya University Botanical Garden has received international recognition through the publication of a peer reviewed research article in the latest edition (June 2016) of the prestigious International Journal of Biodiversity and Conservation. The publication titled, “ Assessment of diversity and conservation status of plants at Mount Kenya University Medicinal Botanical Garden, Thika sub-County, Kiambu County, Kenya” (Link: http://www.academicjournals.org/journal/IJBC/article-abstract/9E5BBF358741) is as a result of an intensive three year joint research between the School of Pharmacy and the MKU Directorate of Research, Grants and Endowments.Publication Open Access Research & Innovation Bulletin Issue No. 2: 2013(Mount Kenya University, 2013) Mount Kenya University, Directorate of Research and DevelopmentKey mandates of universities the world over are mainly teaching, research and service provision. In many African countries, including Kenya, research is usually not accorded the priority it deserves. Mount Kenya University recognizes the importance of research as a key component of its mission. High quality university education involving training and research not only provides the human capital for socioeconomic development but also transforms individuals and societies in ways that reduce poverty and increase global competitiveness. In this regard, the university is increasingly striving to increase the quantity, quality and relevance of research output with a view to creating innovations that will enable the country to effectively transform its low skill-based economy into a knowledge-based economy in line with Vision 2030. The Research and Development Division was established in March 2011 with the following mandate: Research, Institutional Linkages, Enterprise and Innovation, and Community Outreach. The Division has continued to scale the heights of research and innovation by creating a research culture in the university. The Division promotes knowledge sharing with shareholders for accelerated social and economic development. In 2012, the Division made several strides in the utilization of its allocated funds by holding workshops, public debates, public lectures and most significantly facilitating members of staff to attend and present paper in national and international conferences. The Division held proposal development workshops for members of staff where they learnt the various modes of research dissemination. The Division further gave grants to members of staff in an effort to encourage them to undertake research as well as build their capacity. The Division will continue to positively impact on the lives of the community through research and innovation.Publication Open Access Directorate of Research and Development: Research & Innovation Bulletin Issue No. 4: 2015(Mount Kenya University, 2015) Mount Kenya University, Directorate of Research and DevelopmentScience, technology and innovation (STI) are expected to play a pivotal role in Kenya’s Vision 2030 development blue print. Mount Kenya University is therefore committed to play its part in complementing government efforts in socio-economic transformation of our society. Indeed, the University reckons that a knowledge-driven economy and not a resource-based one will be key in this endevour, largely informed by research and innovation. The University therefore continues to invest in research and innovation activities, and in the last fiscal year, we allocated Ksh. 50 million towards the same. The funds were invested towards equipping the Research Centre, establishing and running the Enterprise Academy, the first-ever in the region for youth empowerment geared towards job and wealth creation. The funds were also used for organizing a National Water Summit in Turkana county, funding research and innovation projects, supporting dissemination activities through facilitating faculty to publish in peer-refereed journals and to participate in both local and international conferences. The University has further organized capacity building workshops and community outreach activities. The University will continue supporting STI activities as an important catalyst towards socioeconomic transformation of our society.
