The same spirit has been encouraged by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal No. 17. It is, therefore, appreciated that, Mount Kenya University has embraced the PPPs spirit in the University’s core mandate of teaching, research and community engagement. This is witnessed today by the graduation of the First Cohort of the Government-Sponsored students from Mount Kenya University, a private institution. I hail this unique PPP that enables more students to access quality higher education in Kenya. Strategic PPPs can help the nation attain its Vision 2030 goals by providing globally competitive and quality education, training and research. PPPs help reduce public spending, raise access, equality and equity in the provision of education. The Ministry of Education appreciates the Government’s move to place students in private universities. President Uhuru Kenyatta directed KUCCPS to place, for the first time, 10,000 students in private universities as provided for in the Universities Act, 2012: 56(1). This has raised the number of students admitted to all universities, both private and public annually, standing at 89,000 last year.Publication Open Access 18th Graduation Booklet(Mount Kenya University, 2020-10-09) Mount Kenya UniversityThis year, 2020, will go down the history of every nation as the year that the world came to an abrupt lockdown and closure of institutions of learning and of businesses to an unprecedented level. But, at the same time, the year will also go down into the records on a positive note as the year when ICT connectivity, usage and support to the growth of the global economy grew at the highest rate. During the lockdown in Kenya and elsewhere, ICT was the key enabler for people and organisations to productively work from the safety of their homes. I therefore do acknowledge that this is a great privilege to the Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs to join Mount Kenya University and be a part of the online stakeholders participating in the 18th Graduation Ceremony of this university as a hallmark of the growth of ICT connectivity despite many other COVID-19 related challenges. The relevance of my Ministry’s presence in the ceremony is all clearly depicted through the theme of the ceremony, namely, “Embracing Innovative Digital Technologies in Higher Education: Excelling Amidst Emerging Challenges”. Indeed, the university would not have chosen a better theme than this one Ladies and Gentlemen, the COVID-19 disruption has pushed institutions of higher learning to innovate and adopt new ways of teaching, delivering content and administering examinations by leveraging on use of diverse technologies. We have witnessed that MKU has been leading the way in utilizing multiple platforms to ensure total success in transitioning to a fully online university as reflected in the theme of the 18th Graduation Ceremony of Mount Kenya University. For a university with a high student population, setting up the various platforms to support learning requires immense resources as well as technical expertise. I hereby wish to applaud the university management for the dedicated effort in ensuring education is accessible through MKU’s e-Learning platform and a high-end mix of different technologies, including television, video-conferencing and collaborative platforms. Technology has also enabled the university staff to undertake administrative responsibilities and support core business without significant disruptions. More specifically, it is noteworthy to appreciate the combination of technologies that have been put together in preparation and conduct of today’s graduation ceremony. I congratulate the graduands on making it this far as I also welcome them to the world of work. To the parents, guardians, university lecturers, University Management as well as all the stakeholders, I also pass my congratulations to you all as this is a testimony of the teamwork and dedication in ensuring that our sons and daughters get through their education up to this point.Publication Open Access 19th Graduation Booklet(Mount Kenya University, 2021-08-06) Mount Kenya UniversityHigher education in our African context should be on the forefront in assisting the communities to end inequalities, bring about unity in diversity and ensure inclusivity. The education we offer at our higher education institutions must assist individuals realize their greatest potentials within their own environment rather than alienating them. In deciding what kind of higher education to be offered in a country, cognizance of the population is necessary and two main questions need to be addressed, namely, what are our priorities and what skills do we need to inculcate? We must pay attention to the alienating potential of higher education to the population which must be avoided in a way that brings about relevance. For instance, we have a lot of sunshine in Africa. So how much emphasize have we placed on solar energy production and its utilization? What about studies based on agriculture and other natural resources which are so relevant in Africa? We must have our priorities right. As universities, we must embrace community engagement in order to understand our local communities well enough, come up with society-based projects and curricula, come up with strategies of tackling challenges facing the local communities such as environment degradation, conflicts, unemployment, dehumanizing poverty levels, youth radicalization, diseases, and many others. When higher education institutions successfully integrate their programmes with the needs of the local, regional and global communities, it is only then that they become vehicles for the achievement of equity, unity in diversity and inclusivity. Thus, congratulations to MKU students, staff and management on the recognition by the United Nations Academic Impact office as the SDG 10 HUB on Reduced Inequalities. This is a perfect testimony of MKU’s continued effort in enhancing equity, unity in diversity and inclusivity in the society.Publication Open Access 20th Graduation Booklet(Mount Kenya University, 2021-12-10) Mount Kenya UniversityI must congratulate the 2021 graduands of Mount Kenya University whose achievement we are witnessing today. Universities are called to contribute towards ending these inequalities through their triple-mandate of teaching, research and community engagement. More specifically, every university must contribute towards creation of awareness of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 and ensure all university activities are directed towards the achievement of the SDGs. I congratulate MountKenya University on having been bestowed upon the responsibility of serving as the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) Hub for SDG No. 10 on Reduced Inequalities. This is an achievement which comes with a lot of responsibilities and expectations on what the university ought to institutionalize to succeed in this mandate. Mount Kenya University has mplemented programmes that support the SDGs 2030 and in so doing, contributes towards ending inequalities through capacity-buildingin health sciences, in education, ICT, engineering and energy production, gender and persons living with disabilities, among others.Publication Open Access 23rd Graduation Booklet(Mount Kenya University, 2023-08-04) Mount Kenya UniversityI am honoured to serve as the Chief Guest at the 23 rd Graduation Ceremony of Mount Kenya University. This is a golden opportunity to celebrate the victory of the graduands who are moving to the next phase of their lives in utilizing their acquired knowledge and skills to make positive contribution in the nation building. Therefore I congratulate all graduands, parents/guardians, the University fraternity, and all other stakeholders for the hard work that has brought us together this far. “Embracing Law, Science and Technology for Advancement of Climate Change Interventions” as the theme of today’s graduation ceremony is indeed, a timely input.Needless to say, Climate Change and the “greenhouse” interventions need a serious commitment because of the adverse disruptive effects to human ecosystems, operations, subsistence, wellness, and overall lifestyles. This then necessitates multi-faceted strategies and use of Science, Technology and Innovation in sustainable interventions as an obligation to all governments and their agencies across the world, NGOs, institutions of higher learning, business community, professional bodies, and all other stakeholders working together. The rise in research on “greenhouse” effects/ climate change mitigation is a vital input by universities and research organisations for bridging the glaring policy gaps in environmental education, consumer behaviour, rewarding and sanctions systems, legislation and government organizational support in climate change mitigation.Publication Open Access 24th Graduation Booklet(Mount Kenya University, 2023-12-08) Mount Kenya UniversityI wish to begin with thanking Mount Kenya University (MKU) for giving me this opportunity to serve as the Chief Guest during the University’s 24 th Graduation Ceremony.Today, we celebrate not only graduands’ academic accomplishments but also the journey of growth, perseverance, and discovery that has brought them to this joyous moment. I appreciate MKU for choosing a very progressive theme for this Graduation Ceremony, which is, “The Role of Higher Education in Driving Small-Scale Industry for Socio-Economic Equity through Linkages”. As you are aware Small Scale Industries play a critical role in our economic development creating employment for 14.1 million persons representing at least 93% of our national workforce. The sector contributes24% to the GDP.Publication Open Access 25th Graduation Booklet(Mount Kenya University, 2024-08-02) Mount Kenya UniversityIt gives me great honour to join the Mount Kenya University fraternity during the 25th Graduation Ceremony.
