Abstract
Since the first case was reported in Kenya in 1984, HIV/AIDS has been rising steadily, with
increase being widespread between and within the ages of 15-49. Given that the population in this
age bracket forms the key reproductive and vital man power, HIV/AIDS has therefore had serious
consequences for various sectors of the economy including education. In the most recent statistics
released by MoH in conjunction with the NASCOP, a report that the HIV/AIDS prevalance rate in
the country is at 6.1% while Homa-Bay county prevalance rate is at the highest with a percentage of
18%, Ndhiwa sub-county leads with 21%. This is reason why the main purpose of this study was to
investigate the effect of HIV/AIDS on students performance in Ndhiwa sub-county and also how
the same can be used to mitigate the spread and the effects of HIV/AIDS in the region. It is worth
noting that the relationship between HIV/AIDS and education is circular. There are number of ways
HIV/AIDS can affect education but equally there are many ways in which education can be useful
in fight against HIV/AIDS. Theoritically, this study will be based on the theory of Health Believe
Model (HBM) which will help in explaining and predicting health-related behaviours particularly
in regard to the uptake of health services. The research will use a method that will allow collection
of comprehensive data to provide an in-depth study why strategies employed have not produced the
desired results. The population of the study will be parents, teachers and learners within the 30
sampled primary schools and secondary schools within the sub-county. The study will employ
cross-sectional survey to collect data in a standardized and detailed form through formation of
quastionnaires , interviews, schedules and observation of checklists data from written records
available in the research sites will be obtained to cross check information given by informations as
well as to help determine some of the impacts. The information collected was analysed using
percentage distribution, tables and narratives. The study based its hypothesis on challenges which
students undergo during learning proceses such as cronic absenteeism, dropping out of schools, lack
of basic resources such as school fees, uniforms and stationary, stigmatization and descrimination
among others. Findings and recommendations will be of benefit to schools, parents, county
education administrators, policy makers among others to help in mitigating effects of HIV/AIDS
on students academic performence.
