The spirit of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) has been embraced in Kenya in diverse and efficient ways since 2008 when the country unveiled the Kenya Vision 2030 as the national development blue print. The same spirit has been encouraged by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal No. 17. It is, therefore, appreciated that, Mount Kenya University has embraced the PPPs spirit in the University’s core mandate of teaching, research and community engagement. This is witnessed today by the graduation of the First Cohort of the Government-Sponsored students from Mount Kenya University, a private institution. I hail this unique PPP that enables more students to access quality higher education in Kenya. Strategic PPPs can help the nation attain its Vision 2030 goals by providing globally competitive and quality education, training and research. PPPs help reduce public spending, raise access, equality and equity in the provision of education. The Ministry of Education appreciates the Government’s move to place students in private universities. President Uhuru Kenyatta directed KUCCPS to place, for the first time, 10,000 students in private universities as provided for in the Universities Act, 2012: 56(1). This has raised the number of students admitted to all universities, both private and public annually, standing at 89,000 last year.
