Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate on the relationship between academic performance
and socio - economic factors. The study guided by the following objectives. Investigating the
academic performance of students from challenged socio - economic background in Masinga
sub - county. To determine the academic performance of students from stable socio - economic
background in Masinga sub - county and to examine how parents marital status affects students
academic performance. This will be done to give the students the morale of not involving
themselves in activities that might undermine them due to their social economic background.
The main purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between socio - economic and
performance background factors in Masinga Boys' high School both in Masinga Sub - county
specifically, the study focused on low grade outputs in relation to access to university. Due to
the exploratory nature of the study, and holistic approach that was undertaken both at home
and school environment were targeted as points of investigation. Individual interviews with
learners, educators, principals and parents were done.
In chapter three questionnaire methods were employed to collect information for the purpose
of the study, the researcher targeted two secondary schools out of twenty five schools found in
Masinga Sub - county with a total of six hundred students. Data was collected using
questionnaires. Data was given in comprehensive analyzing tables, percentages, pie charts
tallies and graphs. the researcher recommended that there should be public awareness seminars
and guidance and counseling to the both students and parents to show them how to deal with
socio - economic background of their families in education. Lastly the study highlighted further
directions to future studies.
