Abstract
Effective teaching and actual classroom handling of the lesson in a particular class and subject calls for thorough and careful preparation by the teachers concerned. It is done in order to realize teacher contact hours with pupils for high performance in the summative examinations. The purpose of this study is to determine teacher contact hours with pupils on the pupils’ performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination in public primary schools in Kitui Central District, Kitui County, Kenya. The outcome and findings may help in attaining high performance in KCPE in terms of mean scores as the measure of performance. Background to the study will concentrate on teacher contact hours internationally, nationally and locally. Statement of the problem will provide evidence for the research and purpose of the study will justify the problem. The objectives of the study will be, to determine the teacher contact hours with pupils on KCPE performance, to find out the variations of teacher contact hours with pupils on KCPE performance in different schools in Kitui Central District, to determine causes of variations in frequency attendance of teachers at work on KCPE performance, to investigate the influence of teacher contact hours with pupils on KCPE performance.assumptions of the study, significance, limitations and delimitations, theoretical and conceptual framework will be considered. Related literature will be reviewed and gaps identified. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted. Locale of the study will be Kitui Central Central. The study targets a population of 724 teachers with 72 head teachers, 72 deputy head teachers and 580 teachers in 72 public primary schools. Simple random sampling will be used to select a sample of 216 respondents, in which 10 will be head teachers, 10 deputy head teachers and 197 teachers in the 10 purposively selected primary schools by category clusters. The sample size will be 30% of the population and about the 30% minimum recommended representative sample of a small population about (less than 1000). Questionnaires will be used as instruments for data collection from the respondents administered by the researcher. Piloting will be done in 3 schools in Kyangwithya zone. This will be for the purpose of improving reliability and validity of the instrument for data collection. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, analyzed in tables, graphs and pie charts as well as means and percentages. The study will be expected to have a practical significance because it may lead to improvement of KCPE performance in Kenya.
