Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors currently affecting the performance of
Geography in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary education (KCSE) in Makindu Zone in
Makindu Sub-County of Makueni County. The performance of Geography, one of the subjects in
secondary school curriculum, has been declining in Makindu Zone in Makindu Sub-County of
Makueni County. The objectives of the study were to establish the perception of students
towards Geography, to establish the number of lessons allocated to Geography in the school
curriculum, determine the resources available for Geography and to determine the effect of
teachers in the performance of Geography in Makindu Zone in Makindu Sub-County of Makueni
County. The study was conducted in a sample of two out of eight schools in the Zone. A sample
of 1 Zonal Quality assurance and Standards officer (ZQASO), 1 District Quality assurance and
Standards officer (DQASO), 2 principals, 2 H.O.Ds, 4 Geography teachers and 60 students were
selected for the study. Descriptive research design was used for the study. The data was collected
through interview schedules for D.Q.A.SO, Z.Q.A.S.O, principals and H.O.Ds and
questionnaires for Geography teachers and students.
