Abstract
Information Communication Technology (ICT) plays a significant role in the management of
human resource and equipment. Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2005 intended to ensure that education
and training service provision and delivery utilizes modern ICT in the management of human
resource and tools. Available literature has reported much about ICT, but there is little
information reported on the effectiveness of ICT on the management of staff records, student
projects and equipment inventories in the secondary schools in Nyahururu Sub-county of Kenya.
The study therefore sought to find out the extent to which ICT influences management of staff
records, student projects and equipment inventories in secondary schools in Nyahururu sub-
county, Kenya. The objectives of the study were to establish the effectiveness of ICT on the
management of staff records, to find out the effectiveness of ICT on the management of student
projects, and to determine the effectiveness of ICT on the management of equipment inventories
in secondary schools in Nyahururu sub-county in Kenya. The study was carried out using a
descriptive survey on a population of 6123 respondents composed of 933 teachers, 560 office
workers, and 4673 students. The study adopted purposive sampling and stratified sampling
designs to select 432 respondents composed of 36 store keepers, 36 teachers (HOD’s curriculum)
and 360 students. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics which included
frequencies and percentages, with the help of SPSS version 20.0. Analyzed data was presented
in form of charts and graphs. The study findings revealed that teachers were effective in using
ICT to manage their records for instance in preparing revision materials, using emails and ICT to
illustrate science experiments. Students were also effective using ICT in managing their projects
for instance accessing past papers, games and sports, using internet for international awareness,
creativity, and accessing information on their careers development. Members of non-teaching
staff were effective in using ICT in management of school inventories by preparing and
maintaining professional documents, financial records and making work reports. Data was
collected using closed ended questionnaire. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive
statistics including frequencies and percentages. The study findings may generate insights that
may assist Ministry of Education, opinion leaders in the study area, school managers and
researchers on effectiveness of ICT in educational management.
