Thesis: Assessment of ethical dilemmas of gambling among youths in Embu west sub-county, Kenya

Youth gambling in Kenya has emerged as a cause for concern, with a GeoPoll statistic recently showing that 54% of Kenyan youth have participated in betting, and 76% participate in sporting betting, which is the highest percentage in sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of this study is to assess the ethical dilemmas of gambling among the youth in Embu West Sub-County, Kenya. The following specific objectives guided the study; to evaluate the ethical dilemmas associated with gambling, to assess the prevalence of gambling among youths and to examine the sociodemographic variables associated with gambling in Embu West sub-county, Kenya. The study was based under two theories namely; utilitarian theory and Theory of planned behavior. The study adopted mixed research method approach (qualitative and quantitative research methods). The researchers conducted in-depth interviews and deployed questionnaires to individuals from the area of study. A sample of 100 respondents was drawn through random sampling and proportionate random sampling techniques to guarantee each participant equal opportunity in participation in the study. Quantitative analysis was done using SPSS software to summarize the data through descriptive statistics and to determine the relationship of the study variables through inferential statistical test. Descriptive statistics entailed frequencies, mean and standard deviation to determine the frequency of occurrence. Ethical issues were considered such as seeking permission from the organization and ensuring confidentiality of information given by the respondents. This study has indicated that problem gambling has negative impacts, and that prevalence vary based on factors such as gender. One of the foremost ethical concerns in sports betting is the risk of addiction. Kenyan population especially the youth are involved in gambling and especially in online betting on European football and lottery games which have become rampant in radios and televisions around the country. Findings and recommendations of this study are ethical responsibility falls on both the sports betting companies and the regulatory bodies to implement measures that promote responsible gambling. This includes providing resources for self-exclusion and support for those struggling with gambling addiction. Through sponsorships, marketing, instadium advertising, and regular advertising during televised sports, gambling items have grown more visible, particularly to minors. To promote a healthy betting environment, stakeholders must emphasize responsible gambling practices and implement effective regulatory measures.
