An investigation into the contribution of school management Committee on the performance of Kenya certificate of primary Education in Kinango Division Kwale County

The study sought to establish the contribution of various schools’ SMCs in provision and management of physical facilities, teaching and learning resources and pupils discipline to enhance KCPE performance primary schools within Kinango division, Kwale county, Kenya. The research was guided by Maslow theory which was developed by Maslow 1954. It adopted a descriptive survey research design with a target population comprising 767 school management committee members, 472 teachers and 59 head teachers within the division. A sample of 343 respondents was used in the study selected from the target population using mixed sampling technique which included simple random and systematic methods. The research instrument used in the study included questionnaire and interview guide where the interview guide was designed for the SMC members while the questionnaires designed for head teacher and teachers. The validity of instruments was checked by university supervisors while reliability of instruments was obtained using atest-retest method. Data obtained was analyzed both descriptively using frequency and percentages and inferentially using a one way Analysis of Variance and Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient. Results showed that the SMCs had variable rates of involvement in school management issues with their role impacting positively on the pupils’ performance in KCPE. It is therefore recommended that more effort be put in place to help improve their level of involvement thus improve the overall performance of pupils from the division.
