Role of parental participation in primary school activities on pupils academic achievement in Kabarnet Municipality, Baringo County, Kenya.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of parental participation in school activities and pupil’s academic achievement in Kabarnet municipality, Baringo County. The study investigated first if the role of parents in school activities enhance pupils’ academic achievement ,secondly, if parents assisted their children in school work, thirdly, whether parents contribute in school infrastructural development fourthly, if parents provided instructional materials for their children and finally determine the challenges faced by parents in their participation on pupils’ academic achievement. The study was conducted in Kabarnet municipality which has 21 public primary schools and a sample size of 6 schools. The respondents included all the head teachers, teachers and all class seven pupils of the sampled schools. The study adopted descriptive survey design, simple random sampling and purposive simple sampling to select the schools, the head teachers, the teachers and the pupils respondents. It also included the theoretical framework, the finding of the study, and the significance of the study. The research instruments used were questionnaires and interview schedules. According to Dalem (1979) a sample of between 10- 39% of the total population of both teachers and pupils is appropriate for a study. Therefore the study used 30% of target population to derive the sample size. Data collected was done through questionnaires and interview schedules. The collected data was coded and analysed through SPSS version 17. The study yielded both qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were presented through tables and pie charts. The study yielded both primary and secondary data where primary data were obtained from the field using questionnaires while secondary data were collected from books and internet sources. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics for example frequencies and percentages distribution. The data were presented using tables and pie charts. The findings of this study revealed that it would be useful to the pupils, teachers, head teachers, parents and stakeholders in the field of education and policy makers on the implementation of curriculum for good performances by pupils.
