Analysis of students’ drug use influence on academic Performance in teacher training colleges in Bungoma south sub county, Kenya
Drug Abuse is turning into a nightmare, with alcohol, tobacco, miraa and cannabis being the most prevalent, other more addictive drugs such as cocaine and heroin are being introduced and taking root into this trend. The trend seems to suggest that students use drugs other than for medical use. The purpose of this study was to analyze students’ drug abuse on academic performance in teacher training colleges in Bungoma South Sub County. The objectives of the study were; to assess the extent of drug use in teacher training colleges in Bungoma South Sub County, .to determine the influence of drug use on students’ social behaviour in teacher training colleges in Bungoma South Sub County and to analyse drug use resultant behavior on students’ academic performance in teacher training colleges in Bungoma South Sub County. Descriptive survey research design was used in conducting the study. The target population for the study was 1,140 students in 6 teacher training colleges in Bungoma South Sub County. Using purposive and random sampling, a sample size of 114 students (10% of the population), comprising 57 male and 57 female students was selected from the 5 teacher training colleges. Simple random sampling was used to select equal number of female and male students from each college. A student’s questionnaire was used to collect data from students while a principal interview schedule was used to collect data from principals. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentages while inferential statistics was used to analyse the statistical significance between students’ drug abuse and academic performance in teacher training colleges. The significance was confirmed using a t-test at 95% confidence level. The first objective established that drug use in teacher training has a high influence on students behavior in Bungoma South Sub County was found be high. The study also determined that influence of drug use on students’ social behaviour in teacher training colleges in Bungoma South Sub County is significant and the thirdly the study established a significant influence of drug use in teacher training colleges and academic performance. The study recommended that colleges should develop alcohol and drug use policy, law enforcement authority be involved in eliminating the supply within the college proximity, the college administration should create awareness about effects of drug use on social behavior and set up Student Assistance Programmes to provide services to the students including effects or alcohol and drug use, management of alcohol and drug users and rehabilitation services for drug users.
